The Insides Company is an Auckland medical device business founded in 2017 and led by CEO Garth Sutherland. It develops devices that return intestinal contents, or chyme, from a proximal stoma or fistula to the downstream intestine in patients whose bowel is temporarily disconnected.
Its adult Insides System combines an external magnetic driver, a pump inside the ostomy appliance and a tube positioned in the distal intestine. The Insides Channel supports reinfusion when separate appliances are needed, while Insides Neo provides components designed for neonatal and pediatric care. The company supplies products through international distribution partners and reports EU MDR certification.
The clinical program includes REINFUSE, a randomized study of the adult system in the UK and United States. Its findings include reduced dependence on parenteral nutrition for some participants, although the trial did not meet its prespecified primary statistical threshold. REINFUSE randomized 39 adults: 26 to chyme reinfusion plus standard care and 13 to standard care alone. At day 30, 31% of the active group achieved at least a 50% reduction in parenteral-nutrition calories versus no controls (P=0.035), which did not meet the prespecified P=0.025 threshold. At day 60, 10 of 23 active participants had ceased parenteral nutrition versus no controls. Eleven device-related adverse events were reported, including one severe event; all resolved. These adult-system results do not establish outcomes for the separate Neo pediatric product. [6][1][8][2]
